Mercedes Schlapp doesn't have an easy gig as the White House strategic communications adviser. As White House's Strategic Communications Advisor, Mercedes Schlapp is faced with multiple issues. The president is his own director of communications. There are numerous legal matters that could affect the messaging strategy. Cabinet Secretaries have been involved in controversies. But through it all Schlapp is focused on the mission that she has been assigned, and is working closely with the White House's political and legislative affairs teams and policy shops as well in the larger communication operation in order to oversee policy implementations. The first few months, Schlapp is focusing on safety at school concerns, addiction issues infrastructure, international trade and addiction. At the moment, Schlapp does not deal extensively with journalists. The month of March was when she was the subject of plenty of press attention after her name came up as a possible candidate to succeed Hope Hicks in the role of communications director. She's faced with numerous challenges, for instance as a President who also is his communications director. Schlapp is, however, maintained her focus on her role. She is in close contact together with White House political affairs and the legislative team and policy shops as well as the larger communications operation in order to coordinate the policy roll-out. Her focus so far has been on issues like school safety, opioids, infrastructure and trade. Schlapp isn't involved with journalists often in her current position. The month of March was when she received some attention after her name came up as a potential candidate for the job of succeeding Hope Hicks in the role of director of communications. This fight was ugly. Schlapp allied with Tony Sayegh, who was an aspirant. They started fighting in media. Schlapp told The Washington Examiner that she spoke to Sayegh to discuss a recent negative article about him.
