Mercedes Schlapp's job in the role of White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't easy. Mercedes Schlapp faces a challenging job in her role as the White House's strategic communications advisor. She's working with an administration that includes the president as their own director of communications. But through it all Schlapp has stayed focussed on the task in hand and has worked closely with the White House's policy and legislative affairs teams and policy shops as in the larger communication operation to coordinate policy rollouts. Her focus to date has been on topics such as security in schools and the opioid crisis, infrastructure, trade along with other issues. As a current employee, Schlapp is not communicating with reporters. However, she attracted a lot of attention in March when her name was floated as a potential replacement Hope Hicks as communications director. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a good position as White House strategist communications advisor. She's faced with the president, who acts as his own director of communications and a myriad of legal disputes that can throw off the White House's strategy for messaging and a number of Cabinet secretaries embroiled in their own controversy. Schlapp is keeping her eyes at the end of the tunnel, working on policies along with White House staff from the department of legislative and political affairs and policy shop in addition to broader communication. So far her main concern has been around issues such as security at schools, trade, as well as opioids. Schlapp doesn't deal with reporters often in her current position. She garnered some media attention when her name was mentioned as a possible candidate for the job of succeeding Hope Hicks in the role of director of communications. The fight has been ugly. Friends of Schlapp and Tony Sayegh another candidate for the position started fighting in the media. Schlapp claimed that, following the time the Washington Examiner had published an article with negative comments about Sayegh's personality, she contacted Sayegh to have a private discussion.
